Sunday 2nd February – John Wakelin Trophy
What an interesting day on the course, amongst the smoke haze of the Grampian fires for the John Wakelin Trophy stroke round.
The field of 18 was led off by Stef, for the first drive of the day. Nearly hit the skinny gum tree on the right about 8m from the tee. Hope he got “shot” on the greens of our neighbors beyond the trees.
Teed up again, only to hit the cricket shed on the fly. Good distance Stef. On average, he was straight down the middle.
Brendan F continued his good form of late to accept Wakey’s trophy with a gross 71 / nett 67. Brendan also claimed the NTP on the 9th. This despite a dog picking up his ball after his drive on the 17th. He got the ball back.
Log was runner-up with 76 / 68 on a countback from Issy 80 / 68.
Varcs gets a shot at the Adam “Goog” Walker NTP Shootout with a NTP on the 6th. This despite Log going for the 6th NTP, with his drive from the 3rd.
8 birdie’s today. Doubles to Wakey (7th / 11th), Brendan (9th / 18th) & Varcs (11th / 15th). Singles to Cooper (9th) & Ryan W (15th).
Where does one start with the weird & wonderful?
Whealy’s 38 on the four, par 5’s or his unplayable shot on the 5th, which hit a tree & ended up behind him for “negative” yardage.
Or, Rowdy’s 16 on the 13th. There was disagreement between his playing partners whether his 10 putts, were a display of Zorro wielding his deadly blade or Harry Potter “flicking” his wand. There was agreement however, that it was a case of “no care factor”.
Spinner’s second shot on the 13th landed in the middle of the road. Ducky driving past, pulled up over Spinner’s ball. Spinner said, ” so your “gunna” park over my ball”. Ducky’s response, “play it as it lies”, before driving off laughing.
Paul Harmer had an up & down from the 2nd bunker using his putter only. Innovative.
Steven Skeer’s drive on the 8th, hit the trees 25 -30m from the tee block. Unable to locate the ball, he went back to the tee to replay the shot. Meanwhile, his playing partners located a ball in a tree & knocked it out, on to the ground. Before they could pick it up, Skeery’s second drive landed on the ground, next to the other ball, which was surrounded by his playing partners. We aim for consistency.
Twilight is still on next Friday, but teas are not available.
Southern Ports Golf Week starts on the 22nd, get your entries in.
Have a good week.
