Tales from the Trees

Sunday 29th December Stableford

What a vibrant week around the club.

Boxing Day 18 sporting mates caught up for 9 holes & a few beers at the club. Great to see blokes still catching up & enjoying their friendships despite divergent courses their lives have taken.

Then we had the Hammo’s, enjoy a family/mates catch up for a round on the 27th.

A group of Millicent mates were on the Saturday, having a great time, in addition to all the green fees players.

It’s pleasing to see our course bringing families & friends together & having an enjoyable time.

Stef & Baz’s 2 Ball Ambrose attracted 44 players for last Friday’s Twilight. Thanks to the sponsors & all who turned up.

Today a field of 18 contested a Stableford round.

The field included Spinner & Karen’s grandsons Charlie & Jay MacGregor (Blackwood), their mate (with local connections to the Cytrowski’s), Archie Lippis & ex locals Shane Stevens (Stevo, Millicent) & Steve Harris (Mt Osmond). Welcome to our visitors.

It was tight up the pointy end of the field, with Steve Harris winning on a countback from Andy Varcs with 38 pts. Brendan Freeman pipped Cooper for 3rd with 37 pts a piece.

NTP was Steve Harris (about 3m) but he was unable to convert the birdie putt.

6 players scored birdies. Stevo (5th, 10th), Andy Varcs & Cooper (5th, 11th), Stef (2nd), Brendan F (14th) & Captain Rowdy (15th). Well done guys.

Log had a ferret during his round but unfortunately, he needed it for points.

Charlie MacGregor had 45 pts off a 39 handicap at Millicent yesterday. Dropped 10 shots on his GA after 1 round to score 33 pts today to equal his Pa, Spinner & Uncle Log.

Charlie did have his “Tale from the Trees” moment on the 17th, where his ball landed in the fork of a tree & he had to take a drop. Bugger, a scrub. Could’ve beaten Pa.

Jay MacGregor got the bragging rights today with 35 pts.

Mate Archie Lappis didn’t enjoy Beachport golf course as much as his MacGregor mates. Let’s say he didn’t adapt to our greens.

Logan’s lost 2 balls with his drives on 10 & 11. Maybe “The Crow” will find them later.

Spinner has scored a couple of new nicknames after today’s round, after picking up other players balls twice. “Claude the Crow” being one.

The first was near the cricket pitch, where Stevo had hit his 1st drive. Thinking it was too far “out of play” he picked it up. After being called out & replacing the ball, Stevo hit a pitching wedge to within a metre of the 1st pin to subsequently birdie the hole.

Playing partner Varc’s said Stevo called the shot & executed it.

Second “Crow call” was after Steve Harris’s drive on the 8th. Pulled left on to the 7th fairway, Steve saw Spinner heading toward his ball. Thinking “he’s an experienced player” Steve was not concerned. He should have been. Claude was on the prowl again.

Spinner’s comment, ” thought they were eggs”.

The road came into play a couple of times today.

Log’s drive, 2nd (3 wood) & 3rd (chip) all hit the road on his way to a bogie 6.

Brendan F’s drive hit the road to end up 145m from the pin. Get it right, the road can be your friend.

Stef gets his “tale or two” again this week.

  1. Parked too close to his ball on the 6th, only to hit his buggy on his back-swing.
  2. Bruce Springsteen’s “I’m on Fire” didn’t apply to his golf, but was appropriate to the phone call he got just after he finished his round, to advise his stove had blown up. A quick trip down the 1st fairway to home addressed the problem

Don’t forget our New Year’s Day tournament on Wednesday.

Twilight will be a 2 Ball Ambrose again this week. Teas available.

Gavin Fontaine a GPA Coaching Professional will be holding Junior Coaching sessions at 9am on the 14th & 15th January at 9am. Adult Coaching will be available ($110/hr, $60/30mins) after. Contact Lindsay (0428 250 421) if you are interested.

Have a great week & a sensational 2025.
