Tales from the Trees

May 5th – Club Championship Finals & Weekly Stableford

It was a hive of activity at around the club this afternoon with the Men’s Championship finals being played, preparation for Men’s Vets tomorrow & Ladies Open Championship on Tuesday.

Men’s Club Championship

In a match, scheduled for 36 holes, the lead seesawed throughout. Barry Snook was able best Greg Cook on the 35th hole to win 2up with 1 to play.

Spectators following the pairing, said the standard of play from both players was excellent & very entertaining to watch.

Cookie was 2up after 16 holes with Baz coming back to even after 18. Several times during the match a player was able to get 2 up, only for their opponent to respond.

After 35 holes the basic difference between the 2 players were Baz’s 2 chip-outs (one on the 7th after Cookie had 3 putted the 6th).

Congratulations Barry on your win & also to Cookie as a worthy opponent in the final.

B Grade Championship

The B grade Championship was a scheduled for 27 holes. However, Cooper Walters was able defeat Drew Pegler 9 & 8, in an unfortunately one-sided match.

The scorecard showed Copper winning 11 holes, halving 6 with Drew winning 2 holes.

When asked for his shot of the day, Drew replied, “The last, cos it ended it.”

Drew shouldn’t be too disheartened, as Cooper is a young player on the rise. Looking toward an historic feat next year, with eyes on the Club championship, having won the C Grade championship in 2023, B Grade today. Wouldn’t that be a rare trifecta. Even though Baz & Dad Jason would like to think they will have a say in that.

Drew did praise Cooper for a couple of great shots he played into greens & a greenie/birdie on the 9th.

Congratulations Cooper on your win today.

Maybe Drew will catch a “champion” barra when he ventures up north to warmer climes.

The Sunday comp was Stableford with 10 in the field.

Welcome to visitors Jason & Alex Wesolowski (Millicent, although our local deli proprietors) & Wombat (Robe). Great to see you guys on the course.

Playing in his first comp since gaining a handicap, visitor Alex blitzed the field with 38pts. His handicap won’t stay at 30 after today & one would imagine his handicap will come down very quickly. Great Debut Alex.

Alex hits a long ball & his iron shot into the 3rd green from “downtown”, bit & spun back about 2 feet. A great shot.

Brendan Freeman’s 36pts was good enough to claim runner-up for the day.

A long putt from the front of the 18th green, gave Wombat 33pts for 3rd place. Unfortunately, the putt wasn’t for birdie.

John Wakelin won the NTP with a great shot on the 9th, which excited all on the tee block. As it ran up the green, left of the flag, it started to draw toward the flag. Missing the hole by millimeters to finish a bit over a metre behind the hole. Had the hearts beating there for a moment. He nailed the birdie.

Jason’s Walters & Wessa were the only other bird catchers for the day, on the 5th & 6th respectively.

Coming off one of his best ever rounds last week, Tim McLellan came back to earth quickly, with a 15m “long drive” on the 1st today. Welcome to the “Golf Gotcha” club Tim.

Stroke round next Sunday, have a great week.
