In perfect conditions for golf or almost any other outdoor activity, BGC Men’s Championship Quarter-finals were completed yesterday.
A Grade Quarter-finals results
Earlier in the week, Wally Altschwager defeated Spinner 7/6. This will allow Spinner to enjoy this week’s LIV Golf, without the pressure of mentally preparing for a semi-final.
Baz Snook defeated Justin MacGregor 6/4 (not a good final series for the Mac’s). Talking to the players, “Baz just played better on the day.”
In a very tight match, Captain Phil, after being 4 down after 4 holes fought back to defeat Brendan Freeman 1 up. Apparently, Phil’s putter was the difference, with Phil draining some monster putts.
It took Shane Smith until the 7th to win his first hole, with the help of Cookie hitting the wrong ball. But he was still only 2 down. Another good hole on the 9th saw him 1 down. However, Cookie took control of the match thereafter, to win 5/3.
B Grade Quarter-finals results
The Goog Walker & John Wakelin pairing resulted in a 4/3 win to Goog. Drew Pedler had a 3/2 over Brian Pennell, whilst Rob Carter defeated Bill Mullan 4/3.
The last B Grade match between Cooper Walters & Stef Pulmer was a hard fought contest.
Cooper was 3 down with 6 to go, only to tie the match on the 18th, with Stef missing a short putt which could have changed the result.
After Stef’s wayward drive to the cricket oval & another missed short putt on the 19th, Cooper prevailed after 19 holes.
Stef should check on the health of his “mate” Baz, who entered the clubrooms with a distressed look on his face & his hands around his neck after watching Cooper & Stef play the 18th & 19th holes.
Congratulations & best of luck to the semi-finalists.
With Bill Mullan, Rob Carter, Goog Walker & John Wakelin all submitted cards from their quarter-final matches for the weekly competition, this left 5 players to complete the field.
Welcome to visitors B Bennew, Gianni Giurastante & ex Robe identity & now Mt Gambier resident Geoff Denning. Good to see some new faces on the course.
Wally A won the Stableford comp with 37 pts (NTP & birdie 11th) from Gianni (36 pts, birdies 4th & 11th). Geoff Denning also birdied the 15th.
Great to see the ladies out for a hit on a Sunday afternoon.
Welcome to Lauren Chilton, Sharon Joppich, Claire Sherman & Stef Roach, who have enjoyed the “Gin & Golf” sessions & now taken the next step on a Sunday afternoon. The girls played the Orange Short course, with experienced members Lyn White, Glenis Skeer & Karen MacGregor.
The “Gin & Golf” has been organized by Julie Moran which has been a success. Thanks Julie.
With the interest being shown, more Sunday outings will be arranged, so watch for Julie’s posts on Facebook & the website.
However, ladies are always welcome to join the Sunday competitions.
